Job Title: Curator
Reports To: Executive Director
Hours: 30-40 hours per week
Rate of pay: Depends on experience
Time period: April 2022 – November 2023 (20 months, or longer)
JOB SUMMARY: The Curator is responsible for developing contemporary art exhibitions and public programs that are accessible to the general public and appropriate for all ages. This position emphasizes, but is not limited to highlighting Native American artists and providing outreach to Native communities in New Mexico. This is a temporary position, funded in part by a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation in the area of Native American Intellectual Leadership. The position may continue beyond this 20-month period and evolve in new directions, depending on funding. The Curator must have expertise working with contemporary art practices, familiarity with Native American artists and communities in New Mexico, and have experience curating exhibitions and organizing public programs. The focus on this position is on showcasing Native American artists and serving Native communities in New Mexico within the broader context of 516 ARTS’ exhibitions and programs. The staff of 516 ARTS works in a small team, valuing open communication and collaboration in an efficient and positive work environment.

Exhibitions & Programs
Develop and plan exhibitions and accompanying programming with 516 ARTS staff and participating artists to satisfy the organization’s mission.
Make selections of artwork and communicate directly with artists, galleries, collectors and other institutions and organizations to secure artwork loans and other resources for exhibitions and special projects.
Seek out, evaluate, and review artwork, artist proposals, and portfolios.
Seek out and develop partnerships with other organizations.
Participate in programming and design decisions.
Write essays for catalogs, descriptions of exhibitions and programs for publicity , wall labels, and intro panels.
Conduct studio visits to plan and discuss potential opportunities with artists.
Provide written for grant proposals and reports.
Arrange translator services as necessary.

Education
Write articles for 516 ARTS publications.
Work with Education Manager to develop and run programs in Native communities around NM.
Introduce special events and speak to the general public in a variety of educational and fundraising contexts.
Lead or participate in selected educational tours for schools and special groups.

Administrative & Financial
Negotiate artist fees, budgets, shipping and timelines and manage deadlines to keep projects on schedule.
Generate and execute agreements with artists, speakers, teachers and others for exhibitions and programs.
Maintain files, archives, and record keeping relating to exhibitions, programs and related budgets.

Overall
Provide regular project status updates to the Executive Director.
Alert Executive Director immediately when there is a problem and determine appropriate responses.
Contribute to a positive workplace environment by demonstrating superior skills in dealing with coworkers, colleagues and the general public, speaking positively when referring to 516 ARTS, and acting and speaking in a courteous and professional manner at all times.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Master’s degree and/or five years related experience and/or training.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Strong organizational skills; ability to handle multiple tasks.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal communication skills.
Demonstrated experience with a wide variety of constructive and creative problem-solving with
regard to exhibition space and limits.
- Proficient knowledge of MS Office software; PhotoShop and InDesign a plus, learn other programs
as needed.
- Must be able to drive, have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record accompanied by
insurance.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
In-office time will be spent primarily in a gallery environment at 516 ARTS.
Occasional offsite work is required for outreach activities with Native communities around New
Mexico, as well as meetings, special events, and off-site projects.
- Installation periods may involve construction and other risk hazards not otherwise encountered
during the normal business operations open to the public.
- Must be able to work occasional evening and weekend hours for special events (such as openings,
poetry readings, performances, and gallery talks).
- Must be able to travel as required.
