Potion is seeking a talented Design Director to lead the discipline studio-wide.

The Design discipline values creative thinkers and makers with multi-disciplinary design practice. We express the creative vision of the team through a project’s concept, motion, visual impact, and interaction. Our team blends technology, rich visual design, and real human-experience to craft beautiful and thoughtful digital products that have lasting impact. The Design Director provides leadership to Potion’s Design Discipline in support of our mission and vision.

The Design Director is responsible for managing the collective efforts of their discipline members, and to support them with best practices, mentorship, and positive and critical feedback, encouraging them to elevate their work to the highest level. They lead by example, demonstrating excellence in design of all types, both internal and external. Design Directors lead, oversee and elevate the design practice at Potion to its highest standards, through concept, visual expression, motion graphics, information visualization, and interactive behavior. Design Directors maintain the studio’s design relevancy by being aware of important trends in the spaces that Potion operates in, and continually renews their discipline’s point of view through research, discussion, and reflection on wider design trends.

Expectations and Responsibilities

Design Directors provide strong leadership on a daily basis and are confident in presenting their work internally and to clients. Design Directors evaluate the design output of the studio with broad perspective, understanding and promptness, while ensuring that Potion’s standards are maintained for creative integrity and vision. Design Directors lead and manage the Design team, by sharing best practices and keeping in touch with wider trends, through individual 1-1 meetings, daily team meetings, and bi-annual evaluations, helping the team produce innovative and sophisticated solutions. Design Directors are expected to lead creative and conceptual development of projects and collaborate with Technology and Production to create beautiful and functional digital experiences from Potion’s unique point of view. They provide leadership and support to client presentations, planning meetings, and proposals, and are able to provide reasonable estimates of time, effort, and materials needed to execute Potion projects.

Every Designer within the Design Discipline contributes to a project’s conceptual development and should be eager to collaborate in developing meaningful experiences for a wide range of audiences. Designers are expected to bring a strong point of view to both challenge and inspire one another, to push boundaries and elevate our work. This ability must be backed by a sophisticated executional ability of the highest caliber, and exceptional command of the production process from initial concept to final delivery.

Design Directors also:

  • Work with the other Discipline Directors to determine best allocation of studio resources to achieve project and studio goals

  • Monitor and evaluate functional level of project teams, providing feedback and support when necessary, so that teams can be or achieve high functioning

  • Provide oversight on overall Quality and Execution level of projects, from the Discipline’s point of view

  • Represent Potion as a knowledgeable expert in proposals, client presentations/meetings, and speaking engagements

  • Lead and work hands-on creatively on at least one project at a time

  • Promote and maintain friendly, motivational, can-do, team-oriented attitude.

  • Evaluate Design discipline needs, evaluate potential Design candidates, and provide hiring recommendations to the Principal

  • Travel to physical locations for various reasons, including but not limited to client meetings, presentations, and installations

Supervision

This position reports to the Managing Director in weekly 1:1 check-ins and bi-annual performance reviews.

Requirements

Qualifications & Skills

  • 8+ years professional experience and and 2+ years of design leadership experience in a studio environment

  • Has complete understanding of visual design (composition, typography, branding, image making)

  • Has complete understanding of hands-on design skills and a mastery of digital design principles including UX/UI design for interactive systems

  • Demonstrated ability to conceptually own, craft and present powerful and beautiful project ideas for unique interactive experiences and products

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and ability to articulate their thinking to colleagues, clients, and the design industry

  • Excellent ability to provide and receive positive and critical feedback, in an effective and efficient way to ensure that the studio output fulfills the studio’s mission and vision

  • Excited to mentor and help others develop skills

  • An expert knowledge of the Adobe Suite. Experience with 3D modeling (Maya, Unity, Cinema4D or similar) or 2D animation is a plus

  • Ability to prototype ideas quickly using pen and paper or popular tools like -Sketch, Invision, and Figma

  • Comprehensive awareness and interest in new media, emerging technologies, and design trends

  • Superior ability to work collaboratively and participate in the creation of a respectful working environment

  • Conversant with and supportive of the mission and values of Potion

  • Exercises maturity, vision, humility, curiosity, enthusiasm, humor, and inspiration

  • Position deals with confidential information and/or issues using discretion and judgment. It is important to have a detail-oriented, respectful approach.
