The Brooklyn Rail is looking for our next designer.

The Designer will work closely with our Publisher/Artistic Director, Managing Editor, and Production Editor to typeset, and correct the Rail’s monthly print publication in collaboration with featured artists, guest editors, guest designers, and section editors. The Rail specifically seeks candidates who are committed to maintaining and contributing to an open and inclusive work environment.

The ideal designer has high standards for typographic excellence, a skilled eye for inconsistencies, and a mind that loves solving problems around editorial systems and content. They are a collaborative problem solver with outstanding communication and time-management skills. This is a steady freelance role that requires an exceptionally responsive individual who believes in the culture and content of the Rail, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary as a free and independent publication.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities

  • Flow material into InDesign for ten issues annually in accordance with Rail style, communicating each month with managing editor about hierarchy and order

  • Manage InCopy assignments for the production team’s correction process

  • Package and organize final files for the printer and web production, on call for last minute questions from printer

  • Complete issue layout around the production schedule (generally spanning last 2.5 weeks of the month) while reserving in-person working hours with the Managing Editor and Production Editor for the last five days of the production cycle to close the issue near the end of the month (REMOTE DURING COVID)

  • Work with Rail team to update styles and processes as needed

  • Be a good Rail citizen, a present member of the community who attends team events and lends a hand when needed to build that community

Our team strives for open communication in the office and on our Slack. We openly collaborate on work over Google Docs and Google Drive, 1Password.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Demonstrates a deep love of the arts, print publishing, and editorial design

  • Able to manage time effectively, meet deadlines, and prioritize tasks

  • Has a positive attitude and temperament, with strong ability to function well when under deadline pressure

  • Demonstrates expert typographic skills in InDesign and working knowledge of Adobe Suite

  • Is comfortable managing processes involving many different people with different backgrounds and knowledge

  • Has passion for the mission of the Rail with a strong commitment to supporting artists and diverse creative individuals across New York City
