Job Title: Digital Fabrication Specialist (FT)

Department: Fabrication Shop

Reports to: Fabrication Shop Manager

FLSA Status: Full-time, Non-Exempt

Pay Scale: $25.00/hour

Schedule: On-site, Monday – Friday (2:30pm – 11:00pm)

Summary:

Within an Academic environment, the Digital Fabrication Specialist will work closely with and report to the Fabrication Shop Manager, assisting students and faculty attain success in realizing the physical manifestation of their designs and ideas.

The Digital Fabrication Specialist should have experience in the use and maintenance of Digital fabrication equipment (CNC Router Mills/3D Printers/CNC Laser Cutters/3D Scanners). The Digital Fabrication Specialist will assist in managing all aspects of the CNC milling operations as well as other areas of the Digital Fabrication Facility. The Digital Fabrication Specialist will assist in training student users/workers, faculty, temporary/regular staff in the safe and efficient operation of Digital Fabrication equipment. The ideal candidate will be equally comfortable and productive working as part of a team or completing projects independently.

Responsibilities
  • Advise/Train Shop staff and other users in the safe and efficient use of all -Digital Fabrication equipment

  • Under the direction of the CNC Milling Coordinator, review CNC milling files; program efficient toolpaths for CNC milling equipment using Fusion 360; set-up and run CNC milling jobs

  • Assist in managing CNC Router Mill operations, including job tracking/notifications

  • Assist in managing 3D printing operations in a student self-serve scenario

  • Assist in managing Laser cutting operations

  • Use of all fabrication equipment to complete jobs/tasks/assignments

  • Processing/Troubleshooting/Repairing/Creating digital files

  • Troubleshooting/repair/maintenance of equipment

  • Assist in the evaluation/implementation of new equipment

  • Complete data entry for job tracking and management

  • Assist in creating/updating safety documentation

  • Assist in creating/updating usage policies

  • Training/Supervision of student workers

  • Develop/Present student tutorials, online and in-person

  • Enforcing Shop policies/protocols

  • Maintaining a clean shop environment

  • Tool circulation/tracking

  • Working with Shop staff/students/faculty to complete construction of gallery exhibitions, furniture, fixtures, jigs for Shop and campus use

  • Must be comfortable wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment for work in an environment where dust, fumes and noise are present, along with any other required PPE (face shields/goggles/protective clothing/etc.)

  • Must possess ability to safely perform the physical work required of all duties, including manual dexterity, agility, strength, and coordination

  • Frequently: stand, walk, bend, reach above shoulder level, use of keyboard/mouse, moderate to heavy unassisted lifting (up to 50 lbs.) heavy assisted lifting (more than 50 lbs.); hand dexterity, hand twisting, simple grasping, moderate to heavy assisted & unassisted pushing/pulling; assisting with relocation of machinery, exposure to outdoor work environments

  • Occasionally: sit, crouch/squat, climb, power grasping

  • Must be able to work recurring weekend shifts/hours during periods of high demand and other campus projects, as needed

  • Deliver excellent student service and maintain clarity and composure when faced with difficult situations

  • Other tasks, as assigned

Requirements
  • Proficient in the use of CAD/CAM software (Rhino/AutoCad/Fusion 360, preferred)

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite/MS Teams/Outlook and Adobe Illustrator

  • Minimum (3) years of experience programming and operating CNC Router Mills in wood/foam/plastic media

  • Minimum (2) years of experience with CNC laser cutting equipment and related software (Universal laser systems preferred)

  • Minimum (1) years of experience operating FDM 3D printing equipment and related slicing software

  • Experience with 3D Scanners and software preferred

  • Some woodworking experience (table saws/band saws/jointer/planer/sanders/power tools) preferred

  • Some metalworking experience (welding/cutting/bending/finishing) preferred

  • Experience in an Academic setting preferred
