The Fashion Design Program is a creative laboratory that cultivates visionary thinking, proposes disruptive design solutions, and creates new aesthetics reflecting the zeitgeist and context of design in the 21st century. We see the role of the fashion designer shifting rapidly. As a result, students in Fashion Design learn to work in a traditional studio context, as well as on cross-disciplinary teams. The Fashion Design Program embraces new technologies, uses sustainability goals as points of innovation, and spearheads new systems of making, distributing, and experiencing fashion.
CCA’s Fashion Design Program is an open site for the investigation of contemporary fashion design practice. The curriculum emphasizes idea-driven design and encourages students to build a strong conceptual foundation alongside advanced skills in traditional craft-of-fashion techniques.
Fashion Design students can reimagine the methods, modes, and meanings of fashion design while building skills that are relevant to advancing contemporary practice by taking advantage of CCA’s interdisciplinary, state of the art campus. The Program prepares students to pursue commercial, critical, experimental, socially conscious, and civically engaged work through rigorous research into dressing systems, people, society, culture, history, technology, craft, materiality, and sustainability.
Responsibilities
The Fashion Design Program at California College of the Arts seeks applicants for a full time, tenure-track position as Assistant Professor to begin in fall 2019. This position will support the integration of traditional, sustainable, digital and experimental methods for fashion design practice through their teaching and curricular development. The ideal candidate will have an active practice and bring experience in areas such as market-ready design, mass-customization, material innovation, embedded/wearable technology, sustainability, zero waste, computer-aided design, and digital fabrication. Applicants should be able to address the roles that design, technology, and sustainability play in their design research/practice.

This position entails teaching five courses each year and performing college-wide, divisional, and program service. The candidate may teach in other undergraduate and graduate programs at CCA as is appropriate to their skills and expertise. In partnership with the Program Chair, they will contribute to defining the future vision and mission of the Fashion Design Program. This position will enhance our mission to connect students to the current fashion industry as well as emerging opportunities in the realm of 3D making, distributed production, new digital platforms, emergent dressing systems, and business models which decouple revenue from declining natural resources. The candidate’s ongoing professional profile should enhance the visibility of the program and school, nationally, internationally and globally.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Terminal degree in related field
Evidence of research directly relevant to advancing contemporary practice in the field
Emerging recognition at the national and/or international level in the field of fashion design and/or fashion research
Strong portfolio of design work/research
Two years of post-terminal degree college-level teaching experience and evidence of teaching effectiveness
Evidence of teaching and leading in a culturally-competent manner with a global perspective
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in areas such as market-ready design, mass-customization, material innovation, embedded/wearable technology, sustainability, zero waste, computer-aided design, and digital fabrication
Experience working with diverse groups
