Various Small Fires seeks an affable, detail-oriented, and organized Gallery Manager to join the team.
The ideal candidate for this position has previous experience with art handling and some previous experience in hospitality, retail, or other customer-facing entry level roles.
All qualified candidates will be able to soft-pack (slip-case and shadowbox) paintings and framed works, install a painting or framed work, safely handle small sculptures, and have some fluency in best practices for the safe handling, storage, and local transport of artwork.
In addition, qualified candidates will have excellent attention to administrative detail; a proactive approach to work; excellent in-person, phone, and written communication skills; adaptability; and comfort in a high-pressure work environment where priorities can change rapidly. In general the role is divided and is about 60% administrative and 40% art handling and facility maintenance overall.
This is a full time position with required hours Tuesday - Saturday 9:45am - 6:15pm and occasional additional required hours and/or flexibility for opening events and installations. The Gallery Manager will be responsible for the following roles detailed below:
Open and close the gallery
Front desk attendant: Interact with clients and general public, keep front desk materials stocked and neatly organized, create and print checklists and price lists and other printed materials
Answer phones and general email enquiries; direct enquiries to appropriate salesperson
Open and organize mail and packages
Maintain general gallery cleanliness and office organization (trash, recycling, etc.) including patching and painting gallery walls and maintaining the exhibition space
Order, organize and oversee office supplies, packing materials, and local non-art storage facility including delivering and picking up items from storage
Maintain gallery’s calendar, schedule appointments for Directors and Owner
Personal assistant tasks for gallery owner including maintaining schedule, booking meetings/travel/reservations, running errands, etc.
Works with the Head Registrar to manage inbound and outbound artwork release
Assist the team in organizing and executing gallery events, openings, and artist talks
Research, arrange, and deliver gifts on behalf of gallery staff
Research and manage and/or execute building maintenance and facility related projects, as needed
Support exhibition installation and deinstallation and packing artworks for release and storage
Make occasional local artwork deliveries to clients or to and from our art storage
Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop and InDesign)
Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel)
Google Sheets, Google Drive, and Google Calendar
MacOS proficient
Previous art-handling experience
Able to safely lift 50 pounds without assistance

Tuesday–Saturday, 9:45am–6:15pm
Salary Range: $45,000 annual salary, eligible for overtime, plus competitive healthcare, PTO, and 401K benefits
