Bortolami Gallery is seeking an experienced Gallery Preparator to join our dedicated team. The Gallery Preparator role is key to supporting artists and the gallery with fabrication, planning and installation by providing creative problem-solving in order to assist artists in realizing their vision/goals, and they achieve this by working collaboratively and adaptively ensuring the artists receive the necessary support and counsel from the gallery at all times. They will work along side another Gallery Preparator who will both work closely with gallery staff and artists to coordinate and execute multiple projects simultaneously while managing the daily physical operations of the gallery, project space and storages.

Responsibilities
  • Overseeing exhibitions and viewings; liaising between artists, gallery owner, staff, and vendors to smoothly implement a rigorous installation schedule of gallery and project space exhibitions, art fairs, and private viewings

  • Prioritizing and managing own and contractor(s) workflow to ensure smooth and efficient installations and the timely completion of all assigned projects, and informing the Gallery Manager when additional resources are required to complete tasks in a timely and professional manner

  • Working closely with the Gallery Manager to oversee and schedule the movement and safety of artwork, assess and implement strategies to improve storage spaces both on-site and off, and establishing an installation schedule for all projects and clearly communicating this schedule, and subsequent adjustments, to all parties involved

  • Executing and compiling condition reports for all incoming and outgoing works.

  • Assisting the Gallery Manager with oversee building maintenance.

  • Maintain and develop relationships with vendors and contractors.

  • Ordering supplies and materials for storage, packing, and installation

Requirements

Ideal Candidate Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of experience in a New York gallery or institution and proficient with handling, packing and installation techniques for a wide variety of artwork and mediums.

  • Understanding of museum standards for a wide scenario of wrapping, packing, and handling methods.

  • A valid NYS driver’s license and US passport (for when we travel to international art fairs again)

  • Ability to drive and load box truck or sprinter, lift and carry objects weighing 50 pounds.

  • Prior experience and ability to safely lift and maneuver objects moving objects 50 lbs + on a daily basis.

  • A degree in art or related field and an active interest in contemporary art and art galleries.

  • Fluency in Mac computers and Microsoft Office suite and Art Databases.

Foreign language skills a plus. Salary and benefits commensurate with experience.
