Reporting directly to the Director of Development at The Kitchen, this position will provide critical support and oversight of the grant writing process. The incumbent will develop strategies, narratives, assemble and submit grant requests, conduct prospect research, maintain a calendar of submissions and reporting deadlines, as well as create and oversee the necessary tracking systems and procedures.
The Grant Manager will also be responsible for developing and writing persuasive grant proposals intended to raise institutional funds and major gifts to achieve the Development department’s campaign and fiscal year goals. The entities include but are not limited to public institutions, private foundations, and corporations to support The Kitchen’s programs as well as the capital campaign for a new building
The candidate must possess exemplary writing and communication skills and will convincingly convey The Kitchen’s art-centered mission to potential funders.
As The Kitchen prepares for a significant renovation of its 19th Street building on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, the Grant Manager must be equipped to think broadly and innovatively about The Kitchen’s artist-centered mission. The candidate must be comfortable working in a collaborative, experimental, and culturally diverse setting and possess the openness, flexibility, and diplomacy required for meaningful collaboration with contemporary artists. Duties / Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Director of Development and collaborating with the Capital Campaign Director, the Grants Manager will strengthen and expand The Kitchen’s institutional giving portfolio and maximize its fundraising potential.
Conduct a full range of activities required to conceptualize, write, submit, and manage grant proposals and reports related to general operations and the building campaign with oversight of the grant calendar to ensure well-timed submission of letters of inquiry, proposals, and reports.
Work closely with program and leadership staff to identify funding needs, strategize around grant opportunities and determine proposal approach, timeline, and deliverables. Identify and conduct research on prospects to obtain new support.
Collaborate with other areas to assemble pertinent program information, attendance and audience details, promotion and marketing materials, budgets, and financial data, to create persuasive applications.
Lead discussions and nurture relationships with grant-making administrators to build compelling and informed proposals while developing a pipeline for new relationships, and provide regular organizational and relevant program updates.
Coordinate site visits for foundation leadership and program officers.
Maintain The Kitchen’s philanthropic records including grant tracking and reporting and create gift transmittals and acknowledgment letters.
Maintain gift entry of all received grants and ensure accurate donor recognition and acknowledgments on listings and related print material
Performs other fundraising projects and duties as requested.
Education and Experience:
Demonstrated ability to secure foundation and private donor grants with 3-5 years of grant writing experience.
Broad knowledge of arts funders, nonprofit fundraising and grant writing process.
Keen understanding of budgets in relation to proposal and grant attainment
Excellent analytical and research skills are essential.
Exemplary verbal and written communication to write and edit proposals clearly and compellingly.
The ability to collaborate effectively with team members and high level of professionalism, integrity, accountability, and judgment.
Experience applying for six-figure grants required
Experience applying for government grants such as for DCLA, NYSCA, and NEA required
Experience with capital campaign grants a plus
Must be detail-oriented with and have a strong knowledge of the development process and nature of foundation philanthropy
Able to meet deadlines, manage multiple projects at once and handle confidential information.
Proficiency in MS Office Suite and knowledge of donor databases
Non-profit experience and/or a sincere interest in arts and culture
BA or BS Bachelor’s degree required

Starting salary will be commensurate with experience, within a range of $70,000-80,000. This is a full-time position at 40 hours/week and benefits include medical, vision, and dental insurance, a commuter benefit plan, 403b option, and paid time off. The position is exempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act. Salary commensurate with experience, skills, and knowledge.
