Casey Kaplan, established in 1995, seeks a Head Preparator. Primary work includes exhibition installation and deinstallation, packaging works, overseeing inventory, and managing a part-time handler and freelance handlers. The candidate should be a leader with 10 plus years of experience in a fine art installation position, preferably in a New York gallery or museum, and have a strong interest in Contemporary Art. The Preparator will work with and support the Gallery Owner and Directors and will collaborate closely with Registrars.

Primary duties and responsibilities include and are not limited to:

  • Prepare, install, maintain, and de-install on-site exhibitions and Gallery presentations in art fairs, requiring knowledge of material and fabrication processes and digital rendering skills.

  • Manage exhibition production and installation schedules, communicating installation-associated costs with staff.

  • Communicate with Gallery artists in sourcing and fabricating material for upcoming exhibitions or projects when necessary.

  • Generate installation instructions, working with Gallery artists and staff.

  • Ensure work dimensions with Registrar.

  • Generate and support condition reports, working with Registrar and Directors.

  • Organize and maintain inventory on-site and in off-site storage facilities.

  • Work with Registrar to prepare and secure incoming and outgoing shipments.

  • Oversee part-time art handler, as well as hire and manage freelance art handlers as needed.

  • Install artwork(s) for viewings and photography.

  • Manage organizational aspects of the Gallery’s back office.

  • Perform general maintenance and liaise with Gallery owner and Gallery architect on matters involving the upkeep of our viewing and office spaces.


Qualifications required:

  • Excellent communication skills and a commitment and desire to working in a team-oriented environment.

  • Knowledge of installation hardware, including modifications to the backs of paintings, assembling sculptural objects and mounting works into crates.

  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.

  • Experience in construction and extensive knowledge of power tools.

  • Strong knowledge of audio, film and light systems and an understanding of engineering concepts and electrical systems.

  • Ability to travel.

  • Hard-working, detail-oriented, ability to prioritize tasks.

  • Familiarity with Blender and SketchUp.

  • 10 years art handling experience.

  • Solutions oriented.
