Fellowships overview

KADIST San Francisco offers two six-month collection fellowships to recent or 2022 graduates of art history, museum studies, critical writing, or a related field from college or university programs (BA or MA). One of the fellowships is co-organized with the Graduate Program in Curatorial Practice at California College of the Arts, San Francisco (CCA), and will be offered to a candidate from the program. Remote positions with bi-monthly online meetings are negotiable.

KADIST’s fellowships provide a stipend and an opportunity to develop professional skills in collection research and management. Working closely with the organization’s staff, the fellows become vital team members in a broad international network and participate in the development of KADIST’s art collection and online art library. During the first three months of their fellowship, each fellow will research and generate original pieces of writing about photographs and video artworks by selected collection artists living and working in the Americas (first fellowship) or Asia (second fellowship). During the last three months, they will facilitate the collection’s development and management (e.g. preparing materials for the committee’s review, updating inventory, maintaining editorial content, etc.). Fellow-created collection content—images and written descriptions of artworks and artists’ practices, among other materials—will serve as a resource for curators, team members, and advisors in supporting new additions to the online library, creating exhibitions, and more. Selected fellows’ texts will be published on the KADIST website.

Position Details

Each fellowship requires a six-month commitment, an average of eight hours a week. Each fellow will receive a stipend of USD 5,000 for the duration of the fellowship. Remote positions with periodic online meetings are negotiable. The fellowship period will begin the week of February 7 or 14, 2022.

One fellowship will focus on researching artists working and living in the Americas while the other will focus on artists working and living in Asia.

Responsibilities

Produce original content about the practices and artworks of 6-8 selected artists to be shared with KADIST staff in San Francisco and Paris
Nominate videos or photographs from the selected artists for the KADIST’s art library
Participate in the organization-wide review process of artworks nominated for its video library
Help facilitate the management of the collection inventory and logistics
Lead and oversee production of 3-5 short video content with collection artists for social media

Requirements

Qualifications

The ideal candidates for KADIST Fellows are highly motivated, extremely organized, personable, and detail-oriented and envision themselves to be part of an international contemporary art nonprofit. They possess the following qualities:

Knowledge of contemporary artists’ practices, artworks, ideas, and art scenes in either the Americas or Asia
Fluency in writing concise descriptions of artworks and artist biographies
Willingness to engage in research practices, spontaneous discussion, and considered argument
Attention to detail with rigorous administrative and multi-tasking skills
Ability to work autonomously while being proactive, communicative, and open to feedback
Fluency in both spoken and written English is mandatory
