Reporting to the Art Handling Manager, The Lead Art Handler is responsible for all daily technical aspects of museum-quality art handling related to permanent and private collection installations and maintenance of art objects. They will act as the default lead on day-to-day jobs and maintain a focus on quality, communication, further developing technical skills, researching, and developing new Museum standard practices.
Inspects artworks to determine how, where, when, or if to handle, and how to pack for transport, selecting the proper archival and other packing materials depending upon the medium, surfaces, condition, and fragility of the artworks.
Ensure accuracy of onsite technologies to completion of the job. Seek out necessary trainings enhance knowledge of the system.
Oversee crews and workflow onsite/delegate tasks and manage progress to complete the project on time. Lead short term projects (1 day to 3 day).
Head client communication onsite. Maintain a courteous and polite disposition with the client throughout the project, regardless of circumstance. Perform initial walk throughs with clients and relay information back to project manager if the scope of work has changed or there are complications.
Install and handle artworks professionally, using best practices, in setting ranging from corporate to residential, including selection of proper hardware, and exercise aesthetic judgment as needed while adhering to Artech’s standards for quality control. Consult with the client regarding the care of their collection as appropriate. Present an elevated product.
Adhere to a high level of professionalism. Keep good personal hygiene and be a good representative for the company. Wear the uniform. We are the first people from the company the client sees. Leave a positive impression.
Be aware of the projects in the future and discuss them with project managers. Seek clarification if required and ask for additional details before they become urgent.
Make sure crew is prepared for the work they are doing. Check that everyone has the necessary tools and hardware for the job. Work with Install Manager to get additional trainings and refreshers well before being sent into the field.
Maintain the cleanliness of work trucks and sterilize cab after use at the end of the day.
Assist with new hire trainings. Act as a mentor to Associate Art Handlers.
Take initiative with projects in house and in the field. Set an example for other Art Handling staff.
Be in communication with Project Managers, Dispatch, and Install Manger regarding in-field progress. Alert when unforeseen changes occur, and when returning home from a job.
Strictly adhere to Artech’s non-disclosure agreement and maintain the utmost level of discretion and confidentiality
Perform other duties as assigned and agreed.
Must pass full background check.
3+ years of art handling experience (including, but not limited to commercial art handling companies, galleries, museums, high-volume studios, or private collection environments)
Familiarity with contemporary museum practices and standards for art handling, transportation, and storage.
Familiar with basic art terminology and art history.
Specific knowledge of outdoor sculpture materials.
Proficiency with shop and hand tools, ideally in a production environment.
Proven fabrication skills (crating, casework, object mounts, etc.)
Documented rigging experience.
Clean driving record, experience with large box trucks is a plus.
Strict compliance with DOT commercial driver requirements (CDL not required)
Must be able to lift at least 75lbs.
Comfortably work on ladders and adhere to all safety policies.
Clean, tidy appearance.
Uncompromising discretion and professionalism.
Pay $23.00-$27.00 p/h DOE
