Under supervision of the Head Preparator, the Lead Preparator, Collections Access is responsible for supporting the Collections Manager’s oversight of the museum storage facilities, the movement, packing/unpacking, documentation, and care of works of art specific to SFMOMA collections or works on loan. This position collaborates extensively throughout the Collections, Exhibitions, and Design Divisions and other museum departments on logistics related to care, handling, and storage of artworks in the execution of SFMOMA’s programs.
This role is referred to as ‘Lead’ in that the individual directs other preparators. As directed by the Head Preparator, the Lead Preparator may act as an interdepartmental liaison for the implementation of a given project and area.
The Lead Preparator’s responsibilities also include representing SFMOMA to other institutions as well as setting professional examples and further developing the professional standards of art handling at SFMOMA.
Specialty expertise:
- In concert with the Collections Manager, prioritize and facilitate the movement, storage, and access of
artwork.
- Participate in the coordination of preparing, releasing, or receiving of artwork for variety of activity,
including but not limited to transit, gallery rotations, exhibitions, loans, curatorial viewings, scholarly
visits, school groups and external viewings.
Prepare and handle works for Imaging.
Participates in establishing and conducting collections inventories.
In consultation with the respective Registrar, Preparator, and/or Conservator, participate in the
packing/unpacking of artwork. Prepare packing notes, execute condition reports, and update object
records in database as needed.
- Participate in designing and constructing housings and mounts for the safe storage of artwork;
research/source materials and vendors for specific projects.
Ensures that art storage vaults are well maintained.
Determine appropriate artwork storage locations based on size, medium, special requirements, and
safety. Maintains collection’s location systems.
- Participates in the planning, access, organization, documentation, and movement of works to be stored in
new storage spaces.
- Consistently upholds standards in collection care and maintenance. Participates in the development of
procedures and standards to improve the movement, handling, packing and storage of works of art.
Art handling:
- Safely and securely handle and transport artwork and materials throughout the museum, and ensure that
galleries and work areas are well maintained.
Participate in the documentation of installations and deinstallations.
Assist as needed in SFMOMA collection installations.
Team leadership:
- Create and foster a diverse and inclusive department and encourage staff to engage with a deeper sense
of belonging and shared responsibility.
- Works as part of a collaborative cross-functional team to proactively provide museum guests of all
backgrounds with a world-class museum experience.
- Leadership role in the assigned projects, leading Prep I & IIs in all aspects of execution, utilizing proper
techniques and safety standards.
- Function in a leadership role by setting an example of standards for performance and professional
behavior with colleagues. Develop and enhance professional standards. Serve as a communicator of
departmental and institutional goals and professional standards internally and externally. Mentor staff at
every subsequent level of experience.
- As assigned by Head Preparator, direct Prep I & IIs on a project-by-project basis, assigning and delegating
tasks and responsibilities pursuant to the assigned goal.
In collaboration with Head Preparator, delegate tasks to other Museum Preps and on-call employees.
As assigned, represent SFMOMA to other institutions, both national and international, to facilitate the
installation and/or deinstallation of SFMOMA-organized exhibitions and/or presented artworks from
SFMOMA’s collection.
Maintain awareness of overall Collections Management goals.
When possible, participate in or lead seminars, workshops etc. in order to keep abreast of current
relevant technology and techniques as well adding new skills to share with the department.

Education and Training: Possession of a High School diploma or G.E.D certificate. Knowledge of modern and
contemporary art desirable. Art museum experience and/or art storage experience strongly preferred.
Work Experience: A minimum of five (5) years’ related experience or equivalent combination of training and
experience.

Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, create a plan, and execute complex fabrication projects
for a wide variety of applications.

Demonstrated concern for detail, accuracy, and efficiency in the execution of projects.
Demonstrate safe shop practices with all equipment including both stationary and portable power tools.

Knowledge of safety precautions and procedures related to the handling of solvents, adhesives, and other
fabrication related solutions.
Ability to demonstrate and foster good stewardship in regards to the upkeep of spaces.
Ability to learn the museum’s billing procedures for supply procurement.
Ability to demonstrate and foster good stewardship in regards to the museum’s waste handling and
recycling practices.
