THE POSITION: Lead Preparator
DEPARTMENT: Exhibition Design and Installation
REPORTS TO: Manager, Exhibition Design and Production
SUPERVISES: On-call preparators as needed
FISA STATUS: Non-Exempt
STATUS: Full-time (28 – 35 hours per week)

POSITION SUMMARY
The Frye Art Museum is seeking a flexible and detail-oriented team player to join the Exhibition team. The Lead preparator will assist the Manager, Exhibition Design and Production with the planning and implementation of exhibition needs. The Lead Preparator will also take a leadership position with managing planning on particular installation projects as well as managing a team of on-call preparators in collaboration with the Manager, Exhibition Design and Production. This position will also maintain and improve shop, prep, and storage areas. The Lead Preparator also works with the Collections and Registration team on the movement, storage, and maintenance of works in the collection or on-loan.
Packing/unpacking and handling art including flatworks and objects
Designing and building crates and other packing as-needed
Producing drawings for and fabricating museum furniture
Testing and setting up A.V. equipment
Matting and framing
Maintaining the woodshop and improving storage areas
Organizing and tracking AV inventory
Assisting Exhibition Designer with model and other layout planning
Collections storage and maintenance
Gallery maintenance
Minimum 5 years’ experience preparing and installing exhibits in a museum setting
Hand tools such as drills, circular saws, and sanders
Woodshop tools such as the table saw and chop saw
Matting and framing
Mount-making
Familiarity with archival materials and best museum practices
Overhead rigging and suspension
A.V. planning and installation including projectors and sound systems
Pedestal and other museum furniture design and fabrication
Wall building and demolition
Wall painting
Shop maintenance & organization
Outlook, Microsoft Word, Photoshop, SketchUp
SCHEDULE
In-between installs: Tuesdays – Fridays 8:30-4:30
During Installs: Monday – Friday 8:30 – 4:30
Possibly on-call on weekends as gallery tech (to be negotiated)
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work areas are inside, in a climate-controlled environment with light background noise. Work may require long periods of sustained standing during Museum events.
The incumbent will be expected to diligently and consistently comply with all health and safety protocols related to the pandemic.
