The Brooklyn Rail is looking for our next Managing Director.

As Managing Director, you’ll work closely with our Publisher/Artistic Director, the Board of Directors, and Managing Editor in activating the mission and vision of the Brooklyn Rail. You’ll be responsible for overseeing all aspects of our organizational structure, including the staff’s alchemy, external projects, financial administration, development strategy, and day-to-day operations.

The ideal person is a detail-oriented, creative, and collaborative problem solver with outstanding communication, financial, and project management skills. Only exceptionally responsive and professional candidates who are committed to grow the Rail as a free publication after 20 years need apply.

Responsibilities
  • Manage payroll, oversee disbursement of all contractor stipends, administers employee benefits, and facilitates day-to-day in-house operations

  • Manage all financial obligations, reporting, invoicing, bookkeeping, and ensure that an annual budget is created and followed

  • Communicate and direct organization’s conversations around priorities, goals, and organization improvement areas

  • Design and run hiring searches for staff, editor, production and project positions that need to be filled, in coordination with hiring managers and board of directors

  • Manage budgets for Rail programming and projects, currently averaging 200 events annually. Works in conjunction with the Special Projects Editor and Associate on all external or collaborative projects, such as exhibitions.

  • Supervise free distribution of the monthly issue, directing the Distribution Associate and delegating to staff

  • Oversee store and subscription administration via Shopify platform, in coordination with Editorial Assistant

  • Oversee Advertising Associate, holding monthly sales meetings to monitor revenue growth

  • Support grant and proposal writing in coordination with the Publisher and grant writer, including, maintaining grant history, reporting, conducting prospective grant research, and implementing annual fundraising campaigns

  • Support the Managing Editor in the production cycle of in-house press imprint, Rail Editions, publishing one to two titles annually

  • Assist Publisher/Artistic Director in preparing financial materials for quarterly board meetings

Requirements
  • Previous experience working in media and nonprofits preferred

  • Exceptional writing, communication, and analytical skills

  • Ability to understand, design, and build systems to improve communication and operational efficiency

  • Ability to lead the career development of self and of the team

  • Ability to directly lead a team with a diverse set of skills and duties

  • Ability to manage time effectively, meet deadlines, and prioritize tasks

  • Ability to think critically with a high level of organization and attention to detail

  • Ability to be an effective, articulate, and powerful ambassador of the Brooklyn Rail

  • Bachelor’s degree (masters preferred)

  • Passion for the mission of the Rail with a strong commitment to supporting artists and diverse creative individuals across New York City

  • Passion for reading our journal, to understand our spirit, dedicated support of culture, and a deep respect for history

  • Positive attitude and temperament, with strong ability to function well under pressure (we are a deadline-oriented business)

Our team strives for open communication in the office and when working remotely on our Slack. We openly collaborate on work over AirTable, Google Docs and Google Drive, 1Password.

Candidates must be based in the NYC area as in-person work is required for this role. Our team takes COVID precautions very seriously and follows CDC guidelines for in-person office work.
