Seeking trans-masc performers for evening length performance, Chicago

Casting a devised, movement-based contemporary performance work, to be presented at the MCA Chicago stage and other venues. Directed by artist Jonas Becker, this work examines ways the body processes mass-cultural trauma, whether political, environmental, or otherwise.

This call is for trans-masculine identified folks interested in performing as part of my work New Normal. Movement experience required – though could be through performance, dance, or athletics. Experience with collaborative or devised performance preferred. The work is developed through conversation and experimental, improvised movement research during rehearsal; Many of the gestures and movements in the work are created collaboratively. This work is an expansion of a short performance to an evening length work for stage. In-person rehearsals and performance in Chicago.

This 45-minute performance addresses the “new normal.” The idea frames a process of coping with and normalizing mass cultural trauma, whether political, environmental, or otherwise. We respond to the shifting baseline of our current moment through endurance and illusion, struggle and support. Some radical bodies resist normalization, and for others, the new normal is nothing new. This performance explores the way the body mediates this process, testing our limits, adjusting, and readjusting. The performance is iterative and changes according to venue.

  • Rehearsals and performance will be in-person in Chicago. June, July, and August we will have two, four-hour rehearsals per week.

  • There may be a week where we don’t rehearse, or a few additional rehearsals added to the schedule.

  • You must be available for most if not all rehearsals.

You will be compensated for each rehearsal at a rate of $60 per rehearsal. Performances will also be compensated.

As part of the cast, you will perform at the MCA Chicago stage September 6-9, 2023. You must be available those dates. The work will likely travel to other venues.

  • Comfortability and interest talking through ideas related to the work a must, as well as comfortability experimenting with movements without specific choreography.

  • The performance will likely include high-impact movement, long-duration poses and other physically demanding movements.

  • Please watch this clip of a previous iteration of the performance to make sure the kinds of engagement in the work are something you are comfortable with:

(The work will be adapted but this should give a sense)
