Role: PR & Communications Manager

Reports to: Managing Director

Salary range: (Dependent on experience) Pro rata £28,000 - £36,000 4 days a week £35,000 - £45,000 5 days a week

Working hours: Normal working hours are 10:00 – 18:00, with some flexibility required

Contract: This is a permanent position, with requirement for 4 days per week

The Freelands Foundation is a charitable foundation focused on supporting the visual arts in the UK. The Foundation supports artists and cultural institutions, with a mission to broaden audiences for the visual arts and enable all young people to engage actively in the creation and enjoyment of art. The Foundation’s goal is to tackle the critical issues which are limiting our society’s access to the benefits of art and culture, from the inequality of access to art education in schools, to the lack of sufficient support for female and emerging artists.

  • The Foundation is looking for an experienced PR & Communications Manager to join in this newly created role. We are looking for someone from the arts or culture sector, to lead this function which includes line management of a member of the team already in place. This is both a strategic and operational role, and is best suited to someone who can lead and implement on the communications strategy for the organisation, carry out the day to day functions of the role in both internal and external capacities, and has an excellent command of writing, editing and proofing in English. The breadth of this role will require interacting with a wide range of external stakeholders including cultural organisations, artists, policy makers and media

  • The PR & Communications Manager will work closely with the Managing Director and Creative Director, and all members of the team to ensure that the messaging for the whole organisation is consistent and aligned

Responsibilities
  • Develop communications strategy in conjunction with Foundation Trustees, Directors and management, in line with Foundation’s mission and objectives

  • Manage internal and external communications ensuring consistent messaging across organisation and activities, technical accuracy, and alignment with Foundation’s messages, tone and goals

  • Build and enhance necessary internal and external relationships

  • Responsible for overseeing all content created before publishing; Working closely with all members of the team to ensure that each individual is supported with their writing so that output produced is in line with Foundation standards

  • Responsible for managing the copy-edit output for all content produced, which will includes working with external providers to ensure all steps of the process carried out in line with Foundation standards

  • Overseeing social media and website strategy and content

  • Provide direction on sensitive and complex communication challenges

  • Day to day PR activity includes but is not limited to: managing media relations, compiling assets for media, drafting and managing publication process for press releases, representing the Foundation with all external encounters including at events

  • Develop and manage internal Q&A’s

  • Review all current regular communication formats (newsletters, reports) and recommend improvements

  • Responsible for the line management and development of the Creative Coordinator

Requirements
  • Energised individual seeking to make a difference

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and presentation skills and fluent in English language

  • Demonstrable very strong skill set in writing, editing and proof-reading which will be evidenced at interview stage

  • Confident in reaching out to others to establish and nurture relationships

  • Capable of navigating relationships across team, Advisor Committee, UK Trustees, US Directors, and build successful and collaborative rapport with stakeholders

  • Experience in dealing directly with the media

  • Hands on experience of having managed a small team is desirable but not essential

  • Commitment to high quality work output and strong relationships with colleagues

  • Ability to work well both independently and as part of a small but growing team

  • Clear understanding of brand and reputation management

  • Proactive approach to carving out role to ensure that best practices and processes are put in place

  • Highly organised, detail orientated and able to work confidently and independently with team members and other departments

  • Keen interest to work within the visual arts sector or arts education and driven by social purpose

  • Degree or equivalent

  • Knowledge IT / IS literate and able to use MS Excel and Word confidently

  • The appointment is subject to a DBS check, and only candidates who pass the check will be offered employment
