JOB SUMMARY:
The Preparator is a member of the curatorial department and is responsible for all aspects of preparation, installation, transportation and maintenance for all artwork within the New Orleans Museum of Art’s (NOMA) collection, permanent installations, and special exhibitions. The qualified candidate should be skilled in two or more areas of specialization such as framing, packing, mount-making, audio visual equipment, lighting, carpentry or handling of oversized artwork. The candidate must display a strong commitment to quality control, innovation, teamwork, have a positive and proactive mindset.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Under the direct supervision of the Chief Preparator, assists the Head Registar, Collections Manager, Registrar for Exhibitions and Loans, and Curators with artwork preparation, handling, installation, and maintenance of the New Orleans Museum of Art’s collection, permanent installations, and special exhibitions.
Assists with handling, moving, packing, and shipping of artwork and exhibitions; matting framing, and facilitating object display and storage.
Prepares artworks for display and storage, including designing and fabricating object mounts and housings.
Works with Curatorial and Registrar staff to problem solve exhibition display possibilities, mounts, object security, packing and storage.
Follows the departmental art handling procedures to ensure safety of artwork and assists in general maintenance of the collection and art storage facilities
Hang exhibition labels, text panels, and exhibit banners
Works respectfully to complete assigned projects and maintain a team environment
Lighting maintenance of exhibitions and permanent galleries
Assist with the implementation of the Hurricane Preparedness Plan securing artworks and museum for hurricanes.
REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts or a closely related field from an accredited university preferred or equivalent work experience
Minimum of three years of museum/gallery art handling experience.
Valid driver’s license
Skilled in two or more areas of specialization such as framing, packing, mount-making, audio visual equipment, lighting, carpentry or handling of oversized artwork.
Knowledge of museum best practices & standards for packing, crating handling and installing artworks
Ability to work well with others and work within a collaborative team environment
