Phoenix Art Museum is looking for two Preparators to execute all aspects of preparing exhibitions on time for scheduled opening dates. Support the registration department in collections management efforts, support curatorial needs concerning the collection, and maintaining the galleries for positive visitor experiences. This is a specialized field that requires attention to detail, to maintain the safety of art objects, and to uphold high standards of exhibition quality. Prioritizes safety and communication, and is solution-oriented. This position will work strategically and independently as part of a small team responsible for a large space.

Responsibilities

JOB DUTIES:

  1. Communicate effectively with other Preparators, contractors or any other individuals while working to ensure personal safety.

  2. Safely pack, unpack, load, receive, and transport works of art according to art handling best practices.

  3. Prepare exhibitions from start to finish. Including building temporary walls, painting, fabricating displays, mounts, and exhibition furniture, installing artwork, lighting, mounting label copy etc.

  4. Routine gallery maintenance such as dusting, replacing light bulbs, cleaning displays, and touching up paint on walls and platforms as necessary.

  5. Prepare art objects for display, including framing prints and drawings, building mounts etc.

  6. Routine storage maintenance to ensure the safety of art objects in vaults as well as efficient use of space for storing exhibition furniture, crates, building materials etc.

  7. Maintenance to ensure the safety and tidiness of Preparators’ shop, including keeping tools and hardware organized, reporting machine maintenance issues, sweeping, moving materials, etc.

  8. Take direction from Registrars about object sensitivities and requirements.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent experience.

  2. Experience with museum or gallery preparation and installation preferred, but experience in a field requiring manual dexterity, situational awareness, and attention to personal safety is relevant as well.

  3. Experience in safe and proper handling, packing, and crating of art objects preferred.

  4. Valid driver’s license

Knowledge of:

  1. Art handling and museum best practices preferred.

  2. Materials and processes for art making preferred.

  3. Basic math skills, spatial reasoning.

  4. Matting and framing artwork preferred.

Skill and ability to:

  1. Use hand and power tools, pneumatic equipment.

  2. Exhibit basic fabrication, construction, or carpentry skills.

  3. Be self-motivated and able to work independently.

  4. Work as part of a team.

  5. Solve problems creatively within material constraints.

  6. Always prioritize safety.
