As one of New York City’s oldest nonprofit alternative art centers (founded as an artist collective in 1971 and formalized as a 501c3 in 1973), The Kitchen is dedicated to offering emerging and established artists opportunities to create and present new work within, and across, the disciplines of dance, film, music, theater, video, visual art, and literature. ABOUT THE POSITION
Reporting directly to the Executive Director & Chief Curator with a dotted line report to the Chief of Staff, the Production Manager leads the Production & Exhibitions Team at The Kitchen in the support of all interdisciplinary programming (inclusive of live performances, exhibitions, public programs, and special events) through and beyond The Kitchen’s current renovation period. This position collaborates in tandem with its direct report of the Production Supervisor to oversee all technical aspects of The Kitchen’s productions and exhibitions, in collaboration with The Kitchen’s Curatorial Team.
Duties/Responsibilities:
In collaboration with the Curatorial Team and direct report Production Supervisor, steward all logistics related to the process of artistic collaboration from the inception of each project to its final presentation and execution.
Budgeting and planning for performances, exhibitions, special events (inclusive of annual gala fundraiser), and shaping, tracking and reporting on all budgetary items and expenses specific to the success of the Production & Exhibitions Team.
Actively informing and collaborating on contracts and agreements specific to artistic and institutional projects (both live performance and exhibition-making) to guarantee alignment with The Kitchen’s Production & Exhibitions framework.
In collaboration with the Production Supervisor, researching, compiling and collating purchase orders for artistic projects, exhibitions, live performances and special events; proactively informing all parties of budget status; reporting out in real-time to the Curatorial Team and the Executive Director & Chief Curator any shifts in budget projections
For exhibitions, shape and maintain all timelines, logistics for packing, shipping and delivery of artworks, artwork condition reporting, scheduling for install and deinstall.
For live performances, public programs, and special events shape and maintain schedules for rehearsals, work calls, installs, load-ins and load-outs, performances, strikes, deinstalls, etc.
Lead Production & Exhibitions meetings with staff and artists.
Provide creative support to Curatorial Team and artists, including research, drawings, varied technical expertise, and connecting them with additional collaborators, as projects might require.
In collaboration with the Chief of Staff, oversee and schedule items specific to building maintenance, necessary repairs and facilities management, and external contractors to carry out work therein.
In addition to the above duties, the Production & Exhibitions Manager will work together with the Production Supervisor in the following areas:
Hiring and scheduling of overhire technical crew, art handlers, contractors; interviewing, hiring, and training all Front of House/Visitor Services team members.
Supervising all production overhires and contractors, including lighting, audio, and video technicians, art handlers, and painters.
Advancing the technical needs for incoming shows, including rentals, purchases, creating and reviewing technical drawings.
Maintenance of the technical facility, repair, and inventory of equipment, handling the logistical challenges of moving equipment around as needed
Manage the purchase of new equipment and production supplies within the annual allotted budget
Required Skills/Abilities:
All candidates must have a sincere enthusiasm for the artistic program and be dedicated to preserving a positive and safe environment for our artists, crew, and other staff.
Candidates should possess a working knowledge of all aspects of theatrical production, including lighting, audio, video, carpentry, stage management, and basic rigging techniques.
Familiarity with art industry best practices in art handling, condition reporting, packing, and transportation.
Capacity to work on nights and/or weekends, as program requires
Possess outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to move with clarity and calm across multiple stakeholders within a fast-paced environment.
Must be a self-starter and work independently without supervision.
Ability to lead teams while also being a diplomatic and compassionate team player.
Working knowledge of Vectorworks, Sketchup, Rhino or other drafting software.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Excel/Word) and Google sheets
Excellent leadership and communication skills are essential.
All candidates must be willing and able to obtain FDNY Fire Guard certification.
Capacity to move up to 50 lbs., ascend/descend ladders and lifts, and readiness for physical engagement including but not limited to construction, installation, and assembly.
Prior DEAI training and/or sensitivity to DEAI within management and team collaboration.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree required
5-7 years of progressively responsible relevant experience preferably in an arts, culture, and or nonprofit organization with hands-on exhibitions and production experience

Position available starting immediately. This is a year-round, full-time position with medical, vision, and dental insurance and paid time off. The position is exempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act. Work hours are tailored to meet the needs of each production, and may include nights and weekends. The schedule is based on a 40-hour week. Salary range is $72,000 to $82,000, commensurate with experience, skills and knowledge.
