Summary/Objective:

The Senior Framer will lead framing production for exhibitions as well as frame installation during exhibition changeovers and rotations.

This position is represented by a union.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Read design plans to understand framing scope per project.

  • Collect accurate dimensions for items to be framed.

  • Plan for projects simultaneously with other projects.

  • Provide the design team viable inventory of existing frames.

  • Work with conservation experts to produce frame packages that reflect best practices.

  • Operate the museum van to transport artwork and/or materials.

  • Consult with other departments to design frames with conservation, curatorial, and budget requirements as priorities.

  • Produce estimates for budget.

  • Produce, communicate, and track timelines for exhibition planning.

  • Meet framing production deadlines for exhibitions.

  • Work with materials and frame vendors for timely procurement.

  • Track and receive supply shipments.

  • Keep organized records of frame specifications per project.

  • Keep updated frame inventory records.

  • Lead and train the in-house team in framing production.

  • Work with the installation team during exhibition installation periods.

  • Be trained on proper operation and safe use of museum van, scaffolding, ladders, and scissor lifts.

  • Assisted the prep team with daily exhibition preparations, including model making, creating mock-ups, recording accurate object dimensions, receiving art shipments, packing and transporting artwork via the museum van, maintaining gallery cleanliness, and collaborating with the team to review and plan upcoming projects.

Requirements

Required Competencies:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent certificate of completion.

  • 3+ years’ fine art framing experience.

  • Experience working and collaborating in a team environment.

  • Knowledge of archival materials.

  • Demonstrated practical framing skills, including accurate dimension collection, mat and frame size calculation, operation of table saws for custom plexiglass cutting, use and maintenance of mat cutters and wall-mounted cutters, freehand cutting, and safe handling of various utility knives and cutting tools.

  • Intermediate proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and Excel.

  • Available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Vectorworks and Airtable experience is helpful but not required.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to perform tasks that may require moving up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, and engaging in intermittent physical activity such as bending, squatting, or kneeling.
