Manages the Visitor Experience department by providing exceptional customer service and hospitality, maintaining artwork and visitor safety, inspiring and training the Visitor Experience staff, overseeing the daily operations of the museum, and supporting production for programs and events. Works collaboratively with the Deputy Director, Public Engagement, on the vision, strategy, and goals for the department.

Responsibilities
  • Set and manage department and team goals, procedures, and budgets, as well as best practices, metrics, and evaluation strategies.

  • Hire, train, and supervise Visitor Experience staff.

  • Create and manage schedules for Visitor Experience staff, ensuring that all museum operations are supported.

  • Oversee processes, procedures, and training on museum operations and protocols, including daily operations, artwork safety, customer service and hospitality, event production, and sale of merchandise.

  • Provide leadership and on-site management, fostering a cooperative, hospitable, and team-oriented environment to ensure excellent visitor experience.

  • Monitor and ensure the safety of the artwork and visitors, communicating appropriately with the public, handling and reporting any incidents or concerns, and working collaboratively with the Security team on emergency response.

  • Maintain knowledge of Pulitzer history, exhibitions, and programs in order to train staff and respond to guest inquiries.

  • Respond to visitor feedback and inquiries, in person and by email, and route to appropriate staff as needed.

  • Cultivate relationships with local and national colleagues in cultural organizations and the hospitality industry.

  • Identify opportunities to broaden accessibility for guests, including participating in audience development research and evaluating visitor feedback and engagement.

  • Manage events, including but not limited to receptions and public programs.

  • Oversee event production, manage contracts, maintain vendor relationships, manage staffing needs as well as inventory and supplies.

  • Manage merchandise and onsite education materials, including the sale, distribution, and inventory of merchandise and distribution of museum guides and learning tools.

  • Update contact management database, Salesforce, as needed.

Requirements
  • Minimum of three years of experience in customer service and hospitality

  • Minimum of two years of experience managing staff

  • Excellent people skills, exceptional independent judgement, and a problem-solver attitude

  • Enthusiasm for or deep appreciation of art

  • Strong organizational and management experience with focus on team development, process, implementation, and attention to detail

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills

  • Ability to work weekend and evening hours, lift up to 30 lbs, and stand or move about the museum for long periods of time

  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Google Suite

  • Valid driver’s license required

  • Strict adherence to professional ethics, including an evident practice of high-level confidentiality
