The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is seeking confident, visitor-centric professionals to join the Visitor Services Department as Visitor Services Associates.

These are non-exempt positions without benefits, scheduled to work up to approximately 28 hours per week on average and up to 1,450 hours annually (May 1 – April 30).

Visitor Services Associates support the museum’s goal of creating a positive experience for all visitors by providing excellent customer service in a welcoming environment and exceeding visitor expectations.

  • Works all Visitor Services workstations / areas of responsibility effectively; ticket taking, membership, coat check, mobile devices distribution for tours, and parking deck.

  • Answers museum phone lines (general line, Visitor Services and Membership lines) and direct calls as needed.

  • Sells tickets for exhibitions and programs, registers students for classes and sells membership by phone and in-person.

  • Responds to visitor inquiries in person, over the telephone or via email.

  • Gathers visitors’ feedback.

  • Assists members with sales or inquiries, and shares requests to update member records with Advancement Services.

  • Ability to complete all job duties with little supervision.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Prior experience in a public-facing workplace.

  • Accurate cash handling.

  • Ability to handle a wide range of customer service issues and work courteously with museum staff and the public.

  • Ability to manage conflict independently.

  • Ability to enforce Museum policies and procedures and provide excellent service to visitors.

  • Ability to resolve issues in a timely manner.

  • Outstanding interpersonal and oral communication skills

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in both fast-paced and slow-paced environments.

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds; walk or stand up to 8 hours.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior customer service experience in museum or other cultural institution.

  • Open availability; days, evenings, weekdays, weekends and holidays.

Special Requirements:

Selected candidates must pass a criminal history background check.
