Reporting to the Creative Director the Website Content Strategist is responsible for reimagining the customer experience for the millions of people that move through the MTA each day by crafting the voice and personality of mta.info – reaching millions of New Yorkers with essential information.

This role is responsible for big picture thinking and structuring of entire sections of the MTA Website, advising on Information Architecture (IA), rewriting and editing content and working with stakeholders across multiple agencies to ensure their content is accurate, while rewriting and reorganizing it to be more customer-centric. The role will provide training on the website’s Content Management System (CMS) and act as the primary Editor to departmental teams across the MTA agencies. This role is also responsible to work with the Product Manager and development team to build out the CMS with assistance from marketing teams across the MTA.

SALARY RANGE: Min.: $71,161

HOURS OF WORK: 9:00 am - 5:30 pm (7 ½ hours/day)

Responsibilities
  • Migrate content from web.mta.info to new.mta.info, rewriting and reorganizing it to be more customer centric.

  • Coordinate with multiple stakeholders across multiple agencies to ensure their content is findable.

  • Develop customer communication strategies in collaboration with senior management across the spectrum of an organization.

  • Write professionally trained content.

  • Keep mta.info up to date, including basic updates.

  • Work with the product team to build new CMS tools and features, serving as the main advocate for content editors.

  • Recruit editors and writers from various agencies within the MTA, training them on the CMS and showing them how to update their sections of the website themselves.

  • Manage all site updates, approving changes from the various agencies.

  • Own and update a set of text and language standards for the MTA, potentially including voice and tone.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Superior writing ability, including enthusiasm for writing at a lower grade level and simplifying complicated ideas. A love of understanding and explaining things to people is important.

  • Ability to collaborate with senior management across the spectrum of an organization while advocating for customer-centric voice and tone.

  • Some basic understanding of how to convey information visually, or how to work with designers to use words and pictures to their full effect.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent organizational and presentation skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with all internal levels within a given organization.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a high profile, high pressure environment effectively.

  • Demonstrated ability to complete short- and long-term projects effectively and as efficiently as possible.

  • Demonstrated basic analytical capabilities and quantitative skills.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Business, or related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience from an accredited college may be considered in lieu of a degree.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in marketing, journalism, communications, or a related field with experience writing for the public and meeting deadlines.

  • Experience with a CMS (Drupal, Wordpress, or related system).

  • Experience with product or project management software including JIRA, Trello, Airtable, Asana, or related software.

  • Experience with content design, or strong knowledge of web page layout and making content structured and discoverable. Experience with information architecture is a plus.

  • Experience in user-centric principles.

PREFERRED:

  • Prior experience managing social channels for a business, brand, or institution is a plus.

  • Prior experience working in a large, multi-faceted, fast-paced organization or governmental body.

Other Information

As an employee of MTA Headquarters, you may be required to complete an annual financial disclosure statement with the State of New York, if your position earns more than $101,379 (this figure is subject to change) per year or if the position is designated as a policy maker.

  • May need to work outside of normal work hours (i.e. evenings and weekends)

  • Travel may be required to other MTA locations or other external sites
