The preparator is responsible for the handling, packing, condition checking, and installation of artworks. This person is in charge of all of the physical tasks associated with every artwork coming into and leaving the gallery. The role is a full-time salaried position with benefits.
Hours are Tuesday-Friday 10-6 and Saturday 11-5.  The ideal candidate will be familiar and enthusiastic about an art world job and have knowledge of the contemporary art world.   Travel for art fairs is possible.
Salary commensurate with experience.
Tasks include:
Scheduling and managing freelance art handlers.
Overseeing and managing installation and de-installation of rotating exhibitions and viewing rooms.
Working closely with the registrar to ship sold works and receive new inventory.
Conducting condition checks for various types of artwork: identifying, noting, and documenting conditions with appropriate language.
Locating artworks in storage areas.
Preparing the space for client viewings including painting, patching, and installation.
Assist with receiving and releasing artworks and loading/off-loading trucks.
Keeping artwork locations and sub-locations current and accurate in the database.
Ensure the safe packing of works for shipping and storage.
Responsible for gallery storage and maintenance.
Complete any other ad hoc tasks and projects as necessary.
Working with the artists on production of new works
General facility maintenance. Working with the property manager. Managing cleaning and repair subcontractors.
Skills required:
Candidate must be an expert at art handling, installation and art storage.
Have general knowledge of tools and materials.
Knowledge of best practices and materials for handling, installing, and packing artwork.
Capable of safely packing artwork for transit.
Knowledge of AV equipment is a plus
Carpentry and building skills is a plus
Patient and calm demeanor in high pressure situations.
Neat, careful, and clean.
Capable of managing a small team.
Familiarity with art databases such as Artlogic a plus.
Detail oriented and organized.
Presentable phone manner and demeanor.
Familiar with art shipping companies and shipping logistics.
Art Fair experience is a plus.
Valid driver’s license.
Problem solver.
