To support the museum’s priorities through the timely and thorough completion of all aspects of exhibition installation. To work in close consultation with the lead preparator and exhibitions manager to create installations that meet curatorial and registrarial requirements. To execute the safe handling and movement of artwork in support of the museum’s teaching and collections management priorities.
Responsibilities
Prepares works of art for exhibition. Responsibilities include, depending on area of expertise, co-developing and creating mounts and supports necessary for the safe display of all objects; accomplishing the archival matting and framing of works on paper; and the collaborative development, installation and maintenance of new media presentations (video, audio, film, and computer-based).
Collaboratively plans and performs all aspects of museum exhibition installations in the galleries to meet curatorial, collections management, and exhibition design standards in support of the museum’s mission and priorities. Participates in the development and implementation of installation production schedules to assign responsibilities and assure realistic timelines.
Supports the museum’s commitment to teaching with objects by supporting all classroom and museum-based programs. Helps provide solutions to scheduling conflicts. Transports, installs, and maintains works of art in the museum’s collection storage areas. Performs installation and maintenance requirements for art on campus.
Helps curators, exhibitions manager, and lead preparator to develop installation plans through participation in group discussions. Supports all internal projects and contracted work as needed.
Participates in team-based digital photography program to support increased online access to the collection.
Requirements
Two or more years of relevant experience in museum exhibition installations.
Knowledge of matting, hinging, and framing of works on paper, object mount-making, lighting, or the presentation of new media.
Knowledge of safe art-handling practices.
Demonstrated understanding of methods and practices of exhibition installation.
Proficiency with standard office editing and scheduling platforms.
Ability to participate in a team-based environment.
Ability to perform all routine installation tasks, handling objects, power tools, ladders.
A valid driver’s license, and the ability to obtain and maintain Dartmouth Driver Certification, to drive museum vehicles to transport artwork.
