Gander & White is seeking an experienced Operations Manager to oversee key operational functions within our fine-arts logistics operation in San Francisco. This role provides direct leadership for the Local/Interstate Trucking and Handling and Warehouse Departments, with additional support and collaboration across the Crating Department. Working closely with the West Coast Operations Manager, the Operations Manager will help maintain high standards of quality control, operational efficiency, safety, and best practices across all assigned departments. The position will also support monthly supply, equipment, and materials purchasing, as well as other cost-control initiatives. This role reports to the West Coast Operations Manager and requires close collaboration with office and operations staff to ensure smooth day-to-day performance and outstanding client service.
Local/Interstate Transportation and Handling Department
Oversee the Local Dispatcher and support effective daily and weekly local truck and staff scheduling.
Assist the West Coast Operations Manager with oversight of GWSF fleet leases, contracts, maintenance, and related operational requirements.
Manage fuel purchasing and administration of the WEX Fleet system.
Assist with staff hiring, training, performance management, and disciplinary processes as needed.
Guide staff in following quality-control standards, best practices, and proper fine-art handling techniques.
Work with the dispatcher on materials purchasing and cost-control initiatives.
Perform site surveys for local moving and art-handling projects to support estimating, planning, and execution.
Complete administrative tasks related to local trucking and handling, submitting required reports in a timely manner.
Warehouse Department
Oversee the Warehouse Department and support effective daily and weekly warehouse scheduling.
Manage security-system contracts, maintenance, and related vendor coordination.
Manage HVAC-system contracts, maintenance, and related vendor coordination.
Coordinate building and facility maintenance, upkeep, repair, and related operational needs.
Assist with staff hiring, training, performance management, and disciplinary processes as needed.
Monitor staff adherence to quality-control standards, best practices, and proper fine-art handling techniques.
Manage warehouse materials purchasing and support cost-control initiatives.
Work closely with Project Managers, administrative staff, and operations teams to support smooth day-to-day performance.
Complete administrative tasks related to the warehouse and facility, and submit required reports in a timely manner.
Crating Department
Support the West Coast Crating Manager with local crating-department oversight, including scheduling, staffing, quality standards, materials purchasing, and administrative follow-through.
Support scheduling and timely completion of crating and packing projects.
Assist with staff oversight, training, performance management, and disciplinary processes as needed.
Promote best practices, quality standards, and proper techniques for fine-art crating and packing.
Support materials purchasing and cost-control initiatives for crating and packing work.
Assist with site surveys for local crating and packing projects to support estimating and planning as needed.
Complete administrative tasks related to crating and submit required reports in a timely manner.
- Experience in operations management at a fine-art logistics company, art gallery, museum, or
similar environment preferred.
Thorough knowledge of fine-art handling, packing, crating, storage, and rigging techniques.
Strong computer skills, including: Moveware operating system, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and other related database programs.
Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
High attention to detail.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively and independently while interacting professionally with coworkers,
vendors, and clients.
