ICA Miami is accepting applications for a part-time Preparator. The expected weekly time commitment is 20 hours per week, with an increase to 40 hours per week during installation and de- installation periods (periods and frequency vary depending on the exhibition schedule and nature of the exhibitions).
The duties and responsibilities of the position will consist of the following.
Oversee effective exhibition installations and de- installations;
Seek out creative solutions for exhibition making with Exhibition team;
Submit budget proposals related to labor and fabrication costs, as well as budgets for any contract labor;
Liaison with vendors as necessary to support Exhibition team;
Supervise exhibition contractors and act as liaison between contractors and ICA Miami exhibition staff;
Ensure all exhibition installations and de-installations adhere to safety standards and comply with AAM standards and OSHA regulations;
Ensure that exhibition team is equipped with proper material for installation and de-installation in advance of service;
Conduct daily reviews of exhibition spaces and perform touchups as needed;
Assist in special projects;
Oversee, in consultation with the Director of Exhibitions and Collections, the security of all artwork and gallery spaces;
Manage and oversee ICA Miami’s warehouse space; and
Assist with the management of artwork in storage.
Knowledge of:
Art storage and display methods, techniques, and procedures;
Proper Art packing and crating methods;
Art/museum security systems and procedures;
Principles and practices of museum exhibit and display design, construction and finishing, carpentry work, alterations and repairs;
Lighting techniques in a gallery setting;
The occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade; and
Exhibit installation and hanging.
Skills and Abilities:
Project management principles, practices, techniques, and tools;
Effectively communicate with others in producing desired exhibitions;
Work under the pressure of deadlines;
Maintain effective supervisory relationships;
Make effective decisions impacting projects;
Determine labor, equipment, and material costs on projects;
Handle and install works of art in all media;
Solve construction and display problems;
Be flexible in context of changing schedules and designs;
Work with a wide range of artists in different media (including electronic media) to resolve installation concerns in a timely and courteous manner; and
Work with fabricators, artists and curators on artwork and installation projects.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stop, reach, stand, walk, lift, pull, push, grasp, communicate, and use repetitive motions;
While performing the duties of this potions, the employee may frequently lift and or move 25 pounds of materials;
The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from multiple people and interact with the public and other staff.
