The Senior Preparator plays a critical role within the YBCA Program Department under the supervision of the Chief Preparator. This position supports aspects of exhibition production and work with artists to realize commissioned or newly fabricated works of art. Duties include elements of exhibition component fabrication, and installation; maintenance of the wood shop, art prep facilities, and related supplies and materials. The position also aids with planning, installation, and maintenance of Audio/Visual equipment for exhibitions. The Senior Preparator serves as the team lead for some exhibition projects and offers general supervisory and managerial oversight of on-call staff.

Status: Part time, non-exempt

Work schedule: 22.5 hours per week, may include evenings and weekends (flex to 40 hrs per week during and surrounding installation periods)

Responsibilities
  • Work inclusively and in alignment with YBCA values to assist in developing and maintaining positive relationships with on-call preparators, inter-organizational, and external partners.

  • Maintain a calm, safe, smart working demeanor throughout daily interactions and at times of stress or long hours.

  • Collaboratively assist Program team in the planning and preparation for de-installation and installation of art works in the YBCA Galleries; including, scheduling, pre-production, fabrication, and materials ordering

  • Assist with direction of on-call preparators, aiding with general management of crew on, while participating in meetings and displaying initiative in carrying out independent work.

  • Participate in interviewing and assessment of potential on-call preparators.

  • Maintain exhibition audio/visual equipment inventory in collaboration with Chief Preparator.

  • Oversee the upkeep and organization of all art storage & production areas, A/V storage, and woodshop, while maintaining relevant supplies and materials.

  • Assist in training of other staff on safety with necessary equipment, proper fabrication methods, and adherence to safe and appropriate art handling and installation procedures and techniques.

  • May serve as a lead in woodshop, building exhibition and institutional needs such as pedestals, vitrines, media shelves and boxes, custom furniture, screens, and other items as needed.

  • May serve as a lead for the installation and operation of audio/visual technology in galleries.

  • Research special exhibition materials or equipment and develop estimates and budgets.

  • Develop guides for daily operation and care of art work/galleries for use by security and gallery guides, and support through maintenance and troubleshooting.

  • Maintain general cleanliness and upkeep of professional appearance in the galleries.

  • Support the Director of Program on special projects as assigned.

Requirements
  • 3+ years experience as preparator or in a similar position in a museum, gallery or arts organization.

  • Professional level art handling, storage, packing, crating and installation abilities.

  • Excellent organizational skills, with particular attention to detail and capacity to effectively manage multiple tasks and deadlines, as well as the ability to work independently on specific projects.

  • Ability to work collaboratively, and with people of diverse cultural backgrounds.

  • Availability to work occasional extended hours, days, evenings and weekends.

  • Ability to work in a supervisory role alongside peers.

  • Must have demonstrated skills in a number of the following: woodworking, plastics, metals, lighting, and audio/visual equipment operation, construction techniques and materials, use and care of power tools.

  • Ability to read building plans, shop drawings, specifications, and diagrams.

  • Ability to identify problems and resolve them quickly so that installations can function smoothly.

  • Ability to frequently lift and move objects up to 25 pounds and at heights up to 6 feet; physically handle delicate and valuable works of art with extreme care; work regularly in environments with exposure to noise and dust; ability to work on your feet for the majority of the day.

Additional preferred skills:

  • Familiarity with Sketch Up, Adobe Creative Suite, BrightAuthor software.

  • Familiarity and ability to learn or troubleshoot computer related media output devices.
