The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

Reporting to the Manager of Exhibition Installation, the Specialist will be part of the Exhibition Design and Production Department on the Exhibition Installation team. You will focus on preparing galleries, frames, and casework for the installation of full exhibitions. You will be handling and installing artwork for exhibitions.

Responsibilities

You Will:

  • Prepare frame materials including cutting mat boards, backing boards, plexiglass, and other frame package materials.

  • Handle artwork safely from unpacking to installation to re-packing and storage.

  • Work in teams to install 2-D and 3-D art objects.

  • Assist with onsite mock-ups and some model making.

  • Help with the packing of works of art for transport while applying best practices for handling and materials.

  • Install and secure scenic and display elements including wall panels, platforms, display cases, pedestals, labels, and signage.

  • Work with the team to maintain and clean galleries and workspaces daily.

Requirements

You Have:

  • Some experience with framing and/or art installation.

  • Art handling experience: Museum or other.

  • Experience working in a team environment.

  • Some knowledge of archival materials and museum/gallery warehousing best practices.

  • Some knowledge of various hanging hardware for art installation.

  • General knowledge of hand tools including measuring tape and level.

  • Some experience with power tools including drills, drivers, sanders, and saws.

  • Wall patching and painting experience.

  • Experience or willingness to be trained on OSHA-approved safety equipment such as respirators and protective clothing.

  • Availability to work a flexible schedule including some weekends, evenings, and holidays.

Physical Demands:

  • Climb and work on ladders and perform intermittent physical activity.

  • Work in an active construction site and in a gallery environment with paints, cleansers, and other similar products and in spaces that collect dust.

Other Requirements:

  • Full vaccination against COVID-19 is required, including any booster vaccinations as applicable.
